Hudson's Big Race (Get it -- "Big?")

Yesterday was the big day for Hudson and I at the Genesee Valley Hunt Races.  We were in a field of six entries in the Heavy Horse Race.

My brain is still doing all the things a brain does after working hard toward a particular goal, then accomplishing that goal, then experiencing the day-after-accomplishing-the-goal.

A random review:

The hounds getting organized before the parade.
--Hudson was well behaved from the moment I asked her to get on the trailer to go to the event to the time I asked her to step off again at home.  (After that she seemed to be in a foul mood, though, pinning her ears and taking kicks at her adoring followers, Starlight and DeCato).

--The Hunt Races are a gorgeous horse event.  You just can't find anything more pretty and perfectly suited for Autumn in Upstate New York.  It was definitely the biggest crowd I ever rode before, with people setting up elaborate and yummy-looking tailgating spreads, sitting in folding chairs along the rail, hustling and bustling among the other activities at the event.
The Heavies heading to the track.

--We experienced one of those "Did that just happen?" moments when Hudson and I were walking around the grassy van parking area and we were suddenly surrounded by about 20 foxhounds.  They were on their way, with three or four mounted members of the Genesee Valley Hunt, to do a parade of the hounds before the grandstand.  Hudson and I had never been in a sea of foxhounds before, but they came and went so quickly, Hudson barely had time to lift an eyebrow.

--I had to borrow five pounds from the real jockeys to weigh enough for the race.  I have never been in a jockey's tent before.
Entering the track
Interesting, place, quietly sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the event, with slender men and women getting ready for their races.  These steeplechase jockeys are not as small as the thoroughbred flat track jockeys that you see on TV in the USA, and some of them do have gorgeous Irish accents (!).

--My husband, who said he didn't do anything, was a huge help yesterday.  When you have a horse at an event, it is really tough to manage alone.  He doesn't think he's doing anything when he stays with Hudson while I'm running around trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do, but that is important.  Plus, he gave me a leg up in the paddock and reminded me to unhook my inflatable vest so I wouldn't blow up like a marshmallow when I dismounted -- a spectacal that would have scared me and Hudson and amused everyone who saw it, no doubt.
Here we come!

--Thanks to Trish Pierce for taking most of these pictures and offering kind encouragement all along the way.  And to Wendy Youmans and company for the big cheer when Hudson and I entered the track.

--Regarding the race itself, Hudson and I got off to a slow, fairly sideways start and never caught up with the field.  We weren't last, but the gap between us and the leaders was bigger than the one Secretariat left in the Belmont.  Our delay at the start was due to my cuing her a little slowly to run, and to her credit, she didn't try to take off with the rest of the huge horses, but waited for me to say go.  One of my goals for the race was to not get into a crowd of horses, because I wasn't 100 percent confident that Hudson would behave herself.  Well, we didn't have to worry about that!  We never saw anything but their tails in the distance.

At the finish.
The sideways part was her idea, though, caused when the one horse that finished behind us started running.  Hudson's not used to horses running behind her, and she thought sideways was advisable at that point.  It didn't take us long to get back in the right direction though.   She gave me a lot of steam on the turn for home, and made up some of the gap to the leaders, but she petered out at then end.
That infamous big white arse again.

The crowd did give us a big cheer when we finally made it across the finish line, though, and the bugle player gave us a drunken-sounding hurrah.

And, despite Hudson's obese persona, she recovered quickly from the half-mile run and was impatiently ready to go home not long after that.

So home we went, relieved that ours was one of the few races of the day in which no riders fell off, particularly, Yours Truly!

Mystery Solved

At some point this summer, I noticed that one of my mare's tails had been chewed.  About half of it was missing, chewed neatly across at approximately the base of the tail bone.  The rest was normal, but looking pathetically thin and ratty, with so much of the rest of it missing.

I was surprised, because I thought I had sold my occasional tail chewer, Stormkite, the gelding.

I braided the ratty tail, to discourage the chewer.
DeCato's tail, after a two month's of regrowth

But then I noticed ANOTHER of my mare's tails was chewed.   And then I noticed that ANOTHER of my mare's tails was chewed.

For those of you doing the math, all three of my mares' tails were chewed.

"What in the name of Jedidiah is going on around here?" I said to myself, question marks popping out my head.  "I go from having no tail chewers to having at least TWO tail chewers?"

I had to have at least two, because a mare really can't chew her own tail, at least not as perfectly as these tails were chewed.  They were so perfect it almost looked like scissors had been used...or perfect little grazing teeth.

Hmm....
Hint, hint.

I washed Hudson's tail yesterday, and so I left it out of its braid to dry.  This morning, she was sulking in the paddock because I hadn't let her out to graze, and she knew if I DID let her out, I would put that nasty grazing muzzle on her.  I was looking at her tail from afar, still despairing how chopped it looks, when I noticed a certain somebody loitering near it.

WEBBLY, you little stinker!

The RAM has been chewing ALL of my mares' tails with his perfect little grazing teeth.  That son-of-a-sea-cook is always hanging around them.

I quickly braided Hudson's tail again and gave Webbly a tongue lashing that lit up the hills.

The sheep will soon be separated from the horses, in their own, sheep-proof pasture.

I have heard people ask if it's OK to house sheep and horses, and now I can answer definitely, the answer is NO.  Do not do this, not because the sheep will get hurt, which they don't, at my farm anyway,  but because the little stinkers are tail-destroying machines.

The offender, zeroing in on his next target.

Jitters

In just 48 hours Hudson, hubby and I will be trailering north to the Genesee Hunt Races, and I'm starting to have those last-minute doubts.

The main one is: Am I insane? Do I really want to drag my horse and husband for an hour and a half to participate in a competition that will last less than two minutes, then drag them back home?

If I asked Hudson's opinion, she would say she would just as soon stay home and eat grass, WITHOUT her grazing muzzle, if you please.

"Whatever."
If I asked my husband he would say, "I want to do whatever you want to do," but he might be thinking, "I want to play golf and eat a nice meal that contains meat."

Even though I host this blog that helps Twin Tiers equestrians keep up on the horse-related activities in our area, I don't actually get out to that many, myself.  So going out to one is a big deal.  We never get used to it.

But, despite the doubts and worries, I knew last year when I watched the hunt races that I wanted to compete in them, and if I let that chance slip by, after working on conditioning Hudson all summer, I will feel like a big weener.

When it comes to Hudson's performance, I'm hoping for the best but expecting a glitch.  The glitch is that Hudson tends to stop all forward movement when a strange horse passes her.  This could make for an interesting race.  Since most of the people I know stopped racing their horses on the trail when they were teenagers, I haven't found someone to race against during Hudson's training.  So Hudson won't know what the heck is going on at all.

Despite these concerns, we venture forth.  Today is her last day of conditioning, and I'll take her for a gallop around the "track" we created in a field at the top of the hill.

This route we take isn't quite a half-mile, but it's all uphill, so I think it makes a good facsimile of the distance we will ride on Saturday.  It's also interesting, because it contains three hair-pin turns, and if you have ever taken hair-pin turns on 1500 pounds of horse at full gallop, you know what interesting is!

So, wish us luck, and maybe I'll see you at the finish line -- if Hudson doesn't stop all forward movement somewhere on the course!

Twin Tiers Horse Activities, Oct. 12-15, 2013

We have a rockin' good weekend coming up.

The Genesee Valley Hunt Races are worth the trip up north.  It's a fun day with a race card that you don't get to see very often.  Everything from small ponies to heavy horses race on the flat, and then there are the many races that go over fences, including the fun "Pace Race" and the $25,000 Genesee Valley Hunt Cup race.  Local vendors, yummy food, dog activities...and a chance to see yours truly riding her heavy weight mare in the Heavy Horse Race.  Come cheer Hudson on!  Post time is 2:10 for the full-bodied racers.

This week, you also have an opportunity to audit a clinic taught by renowned eventer and clinician Lucinda Green, whose niece, incidentally, just won the Mongol Derby.

Whatever you do, have a great time with your horse!

Working the Details

With less than two weeks to the Hunt Races, Hudson is starting to get her beauty treatment.

Tonight, I shortened her mane and trim her awesomely long ear hair.  I don't trim hair out of the inside of the ear, just fold the ear closed like a taco and trim the stuff that sticks out.  Hers happened to be about three inches long at the bottom.   I trimmed off the goat hair under her jowls, but left her whiskers.

Closed her eyes in every shot tonight.
Since the hunt races are based on the tradition of fox hunting, I imagine she should be turned out as though she is going to the hunt, or at least some close proximity.  So that means a very practical turn-out, neat and clean and nothing extravagant.

"Clean" on a mostly white horse is always a challenge, but we'll give it our best shot.
